Common Misconceptions About Braces in Brooklyn

imagesDentistry has had a bad rap for years – not just the general care dentist, but for orthodontists as well. This is typically perpetuated by age-old stories that have existed since the dawn of braces. Although it may not be common knowledge, modern dentistry has made monumental strides in the best few decades, allowing patients to have a more pleasant experience during the orthodontic process. If you’re in need of braces in Brooklyn, you can rest your mind knowing that these common misconceptions are far from the truth these days.

Braces are extremely uncomfortable.

In the beginning, orthodontic treatments meant obstructive mouthpieces and embarrassing headgear that alerted people from all directions that you were, in fact, undergoing treatment. Flash forward a few decades and the headgear and the mouth pouring of metal were things of the past. Instead, advancements allowed patients to wear more comfortable brackets and wire systems simply within the mouth.

Technology has now come even further. The brackets of only a few years ago have been reduced to allow a thinner profile, making wear more comfortable. Thick, obtrusive wiring has been modernized to use strong metals that can be thinned further.

If you want to avoid the metal altogether, you can even opt for clear plastic aligners, like Invisalign, made of high-grade medical plastic. The aligners fit over your teeth and are virtually invisible.

It is impossible to get your teeth clean with braces.

Braces can add a little additional work to the cleaning routine, but it certainly isn’t impossible. To brush your braces, tilt your toothbrush to a 45-degree angle and make small circular motions across the teeth. Do this on top and on bottom to remove all debris. Floss both sides of the teeth on top and on bottom of the wire. Dental threaders or a water flosser may make the process easier, particularly in the beginning when you are not accustomed to your braces.

Alternatively, clear aligners are removable so that patients can clean their teeth traditionally without concern of the braces.

Braces make eating difficult.

Many of the foods you enjoy on a regularly basis can be enjoyed while wearing traditional braces. You can enjoy any number of pasta dishes, seafood, fruits, ice cream, and other foods. The foods that should be avoided are difficult to bite into or sticky, which could result in pain or general annoyance. Avoid foods like raw carrots or apples, gummy candies, and popcorn that can become lodged in your braces or may be difficult to chew. If you opt for clear aligners, your dental appliance should be removed while you’re eating. Because of this, you can enjoy all of the foods you love without concern. Just remember to brush thoroughly following meals so that food doesn’t become trapped between your teeth and your aligners.

Braces take a long time to yield results.
