5 Ways to Take Care of Your Teeth after Orthodontic Treatment

Dr. Mohamed Aljanabi, an orthodontist in Brooklyn, NY, along with his colleagues, takes great pride in providing the very best care for his patients, offering a variety of treatment options to give each of them the sparkling smile they’ve always wanted.

Once orthodontic treatment is completed, however, it’s essential to practice the good dental hygiene needed to keep your smile gleaming for years to come, and here is what we recommend.

1) Be careful what you eat.

Once your orthodontic appliances are removed, it’s a great temptation to binge on the crunchy and chewy foods that were taboo while undergoing treatment. But since your teeth are still adjusting to their new position, we recommend that you be patient a little longer and gradually ease back into these foods.

2) Wear your retainer as directed.

We realize, no one really likes retainers, but there’s a good reason you should wear one. Our teeth have a natural tendency to move back to their original position, and that risk is at its greatest during the first few weeks and months after completion of your treatment. We don’t want you to undo all those months of treatment you went through, and your retainer will keep your teeth in their new, straight position.

3) Take good care of your retainer.

To avoid putting a bacteria-filled retainer in your mouth, clean it at least once a day. Different retainers require different types of cleaning methods, and we’ll instruct you on the procedure that’s best for your retainer.

4) Establish and maintain a home dental routine.

You’ve made a significant investment in your teeth, and now it’s essential to follow a good, daily dental regimen to maintain the beautiful smile you’ll show off for the rest of your life.

5) Continue regular dental treatment.

You should see your dentist every six months for a cleaning and checkup.
